Danish designer, Torben Madsen, is responsible for the physical design of the LIZN Hearpieces® and the LIZN Charger. We asked Torben about his thoughts behind the design of the Hearpieces®.
LIZN: What was your intention when you started designing the LIZN Hearpieces®?
TM: My vision was to create a product that combines simplicity, functionality, and elegance. I wanted the design to reflect the Scandinavian design tradition with a focus on clean lines and timeless aesthetics. It should not only be a tech product, but also a beautiful accessory that feels natural in everyday life. Therefore, the shape, materials, and detailing have been carefully thought out to achieve the right balance.
LIZN: How did you work with the shape of the Hearpiece® itself?
TM: The Hearpiece® itself is designed as a simple sphere, creating a clean and minimalist expression. The combination with a rounded surface facing the ear creates a comfortable and discreet profile. This division between the sphere and the rounded surface provides both visual harmony and ergonomic comfort. It is deliberately designed to be beautiful when held in your hand and to sit comfortably in the ear.
How did you think about the design of the speaker inlet?
TM: The speaker inlet is tapered and slim, which means that it slips elegantly into the ear canal. The shape is optimized to sit securely, without causing discomfort, and it is designed to minimize visibility while ensuring a good audio experience. It is a fine balance between aesthetics and function, where the tapered shape follows the natural curve of the ear - it should be subtle, but still precise.
LIZN: Can you tell us a little about the LIZN Charger?
TM: The charger is designed with the same minimalist philosophy. It is compact, easy to carry in your pocket, and has a clean, sleek shape that harmonizes with the design of the Hearpieces®. It is a functional detail that also needs to feel natural and aesthetically pleasing in use.
LIZN: How did you work with the details to create a whole?
TM: It's about fine-tuning each part – from the calm roundness of the sphere, to the elegance of the rounded surface, and the conical extension. When these elements work together, a harmonious product is created that feels well-thought-out and responsive to the user's needs. I have always focused on the form following the function, but also telling a story of simplicity and quality.
LIZN: What do you want people to experience when they use LIZN Hearpieces®?
TM: I hope users will feel that they have a product that has been designed with great attention to detail. It should feel safe, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing – an accessory that both enhances the audio experience and matches the style. It is much more than just a tech device; it is a piece of design that should accompany them in their everyday lives.
LIZN: In conclusion, what does good design mean to you?
TM: For me, good design is about timelessly connecting function and aesthetics. It should improve the quality of life without compromising on expression. When the form feels just right and the product works intuitively, something is created that lasts – a balance that goes without saying for good design.
